The only thing I will say is missing here is that often times Layton is shown to have a bit of dry humor and a mischievous side to him. He is also great with mechanical engineering, seeing as how he made a machine gun out of lottery machines as shown in Unwound Future. (timestamps are 9:58 to 13:12. I’ve hopefully copied it correctly so that the first timestamp is already loaded.)
Personality:
Hershel Layton is a polite man who does his best to carry himself as a traditional English gentleman. While at first he may seem gregarious due to his welcoming nature and charming smile, he is actually quite shy and private. He spends a lot of time in his office reading and enjoying tea when he is not off on galant adventures with his #1 Apprentice, Luke Triton. He is a very smart individual, being not only the Professor of Archeology at Gressenheller University - an institution that seems centralized around the study - but also a renowned pet detective often sought out by Scotland Yard to assist with particularly difficult cases.
As stated above, despite his gentleman facade, he has a particular humor and mischievousness about him. From when he was still in college himself, he had a streak of rebellion by sneaking out after hours to explore ruins with his childhood friend, Randall. He often uses his wit and sly humor in order to solve cases and in many instances, puzzles that he finds along the way. He is determined, patient, understanding and most of all he is kind. Layton spends a lot of his time and effort helping other people, and rarely sees to taking care of himself. He is often found sleeping in his office at Gressenheller, proving that his work ethic and self preservation instinct may be at an imbalance.
He is not above fighting for what he believes in, or to protect someone he cares about. Layton is a FANTASTIC fencer and sword fighter in general. In Eternal Diva, he shows just how well he can flourish a blade by taking an errant pipe and using it to defend himself against his long time rival, Descole. It is this juxtaposition that makes Layton such a complicated and deep character. That, and he is steeped in loss and holds a burden of many deaths upon his shoulders. While Randall miraculously (haha) did survive, unfortunately his college sweetheart did not. She is the one who gave Hershel his famous top hat, of which he is never seen without. He is sentimental, and sorrowful. His view of life and the people around him is truly unique given the lens he peers through and I believe that lends to how he solves puzzles and difficult cases.

The trek to the Ruins of Alph had taken him a little over a week. He told himself he could have taken more time, caught some Pokémon or at the very least could have eaten a bit more, but there was something that was drawing him to the mysterious ruins. There was even something in the eyes of his partner, Yamask, that seemed desperate to reach Violet City, and finally to the abandoned city to the south. A cloud of mystery hung over the two of them.
Some of the locals seemed a little put off by Layton’s questioning, and his feverish desire to see the ruins. Sure, they were a tourist location for those visiting Johto but there were those like the older trainers near Sprout Tower that almost reeled at the Professor’s approach. There was something unsettling lurking behind Layton’s innocent curiosity and no one could quite put their finger on it.
The fellow archeologists at the site were friendly enough, and after exchanging credentials were more willing to expound upon some of their findings. It was akin to Roanoke, Virginia of the United States; a mass exodus of people and their lives with only a cryptic message in its wake. Already thoughts were swirling through Hershel’s head, wondering about the possibilities of what might have happened. With humans it was one thing. Humans were quite predictable when it came down to it, but the Professor only knew so much about Pokemon. The Pokédex was quite limited in the depths of information it gave on the creatures he encountered, and he knew he would have to find further research materials to even scratch the surface of what might have happened.
These local archeologists had been here for years. They lived here. Did he really have a chance at solving anything?
“It’s worth a shot.” He tells himself. But he finds himself frozen just in front of the mouth of the cave. He’s ready, he knows he’s ready but something makes him hesitate. He’s not quite sure what it is. Maybe he should have brought someone with him. Heavens forbid there was a mishap.
